Most people in Örnsköldsvik have a relationship with Domsjö Fabriker. Many know someone who works here, who has worked here, or who will do so.
With the “Scenes from the Factory” initiative, we’re opening the gates of our 120+ year old factory for the first time – where our proud employees do the talking.
Here they talk uncensored and without makeup about what it is like to work at Domsjö. About the challenges, but also about the upsides.
One thing that is clear is the unique and warm community spirit that prevails here – which some call the Domsjö spirit – and which makes going to work every day easier and more enjoyable.
What is a typical working day like?
– My job is very varied, with no two days being the same. But our main task is to load all finished goods onto boats, where I have the main responsibility for boat loading. We also take care of all internal transportation on the factory site.
Tell us about a particularly tough day!
– For example, if we have a breakdown, or we have to deal with waste that we don’t quite know what to do with – that can be a tough day. Another thing that can be tough is if the boat arrives several hours late, for example because of bad weather, so we have to load late at night. If you have planned to do things with your family and children in the evening, this can be annoying.
What is the best thing about working at Domsjö Fabriker?
– I would have to say the colleagues. We have a lot of fun together, we’re all like friends. There’s a lot of humor and high ceilings here, but when it’s work, it’s serious. You dare to open up to each other in the break room, it’s really nice to feel that trust.
Can you describe “the spirit of Domsjö” and your company culture?
– For me, the “Domsjö spirit” stands for the community we have here – that everyone works for each other and that we pull in the same direction. It may seem like we have a rather harsh jargon sometimes, but actually we’re all softies (*laughs*).
What challenges are there in your job?
– As we are understaffed and there are many things happening at the same time, it can be a bit stressful. Especially during weekends and on-calls when it is difficult to get hold of someone who knows, then it can get busy.
When are you particularly happy at work?
– Basically every day, otherwise I wouldn’t be here. Many people want to know exactly what to do when they come to work, but for me it’s the other way around. I almost never know what to do, and there’s a positive challenge in that – in being able to solve problems.
What is the best thing about working at Domsjö?
– What I like most is that I get to work with employees throughout the factory, in different roles. I think it’s so much fun to learn new things, and I like working with people.
Is there anything less good about your workplace?
– I think it’s a bit too homogeneous here. I don’t really represent what you look like, so to speak. There are quite a few of us who have a different background, but the community and the people make you feel included.
Would you recommend someone to start working here?
– Absolutely, it’s a great place to work! You never know where you’ll end up, it’s unpredictable, fun and exciting. Many employees also means many personalities – it makes every day exciting!
