Sustainability

Domsjö Fabriker has a responsibility for the earth’s resources and how they are used. We want to improve existing operations and create new uses for the growing forest. In this way, we contribute to a reduced environmental impact, increased growth and more jobs.

We make more of the tree

We are a biorefinery with a goal to make more of the tree and create sustainable products from the forest. We know today that we can make a difference. We, together with our owners Aditya Birla and our customers, are a force in the development towards a sustainable bioeconomy, where we use the forest as a sustainable resource.

Domsjö Fabriker offers renewable products

Domsjö Fabriker offers renewable products and works continuously to reduce our own environmental impact. We have focused on energy efficiency with great success, we review our transportation and strive to become completely independent of fossil fuels. There is a well-developed infrastructure in the industrial area, and Domsjö cooperates with other companies on energy issues, with electricity, fuel, steam and condensate being traded between the companies. Today, 99 percent of cellulose is produced without using any fossil fuels. Domsjö Fabriker is a biorefinery with a completely closed bleaching plant and bleaching is done completely without chlorine chemicals. All our products are based on renewable and environmentally friendly raw materials. Our products can replace fossil-based products in the textile and chemical industries, among others, and thus contribute to a stronger bioeconomy.

We make more of the tree

biogas

Domsjö’s biological treatment plant is anaerobic and produces about 13 million normal cubic meters of biogas annually, which is equivalent to 90GWh or 9 million liters of diesel. Our plant is one of Sweden’s largest producers of biogas. The biogas is recovered and used as an energy source in the drying of lignin.

Bioresin is derived from the resin and oils of the tree. The bioresin is separated and sold as fuel. The calorific value of bioresin is comparable to heating oil.

Rejects, bark and sawdust are used as biofuel.

Purification of the cellulose separates fiber rejects, which are used as recycled fiber substitutes for paperboard production.

The carbon dioxide produced is cleaned up and used mainly for industrial purposes.

Awards and prizes
